€ 81,000 Abbey Lane upgrade to include outdoor dining area
Abbey Lane off Arklow’s Main Street is about to undergo a major facelift, creating a new alfresco dining area in the city.
The municipal district of rklow recently received € 81,000 from Failte Ireland as part of the local authorities’ weather protection and outdoor catering infrastructure program.
Abbey Lane was chosen to become a much-needed outdoor community space in the city center. The grant is expected to be used to transform the space into a friendly and vibrant all-day socializing center by including a sheltered dining room with lighting and heating, murals, various greening options and rest and discussion areas.
A small terrace area will also be set up for street musicians, street artists, poetry recitals, heritage and culture conferences. Local artists and artisans could also use this space to create another place for tourists and locals. This area is ideally located for this project because it is well lit and very accessible to all.
Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of Arklow, Cllr Miriam Murphy, said: “I am delighted that the application for funding from the Municipal District of Arklow for an outdoor catering facility has been accepted. The sheltered dining room will be a great addition to the city, the transformation of the space will support local businesses by encouraging increased pedestrian activity.
