Chadwicks gets OK for the outdoor dining area

Alexandria City Council has approved Chadwicks’ plan for a new outdoor dining area, which the restaurant hopes to open later this summer.

The 70 outdoor seating will be located at the front of the restaurant at 203 Strand Street and to the side, partly in Gilpin Alley.

Restaurateurs plan to place two outdoor seating in the area directly across from the restaurant, Gilpin Alley (48 seats), and a balcony to be built over Gilpin Alley (20 seats). Chadwicks plans to include outdoor speakers to provide background music in the outdoor dining areas. Music from the speakers will be played at low decibel levels, in accordance with the city noise ordinance. The staff reinforced the incidental and substantive nature of the music and allowed it during the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

City staff supported the applicant’s request for additional outdoor seating, noting that this will complement existing uses along Strand Street and comply with approved food courts such as those offered at nearby restaurants. like the Old Dominion Boat Club, The Hummingbird and Virtue Feed and Grain. Additionally, this proposal is consistent with recommendations in the Small Riparian Plan, which calls for more waterfront activations and alfresco dining along Strand Street.

Chadwicks has been a local favorite since 1967 and at its current location since 1979.
