Board of Trustees approves outdoor classroom and dining hall for Buckhannon-Upshur High School

BUCKHANNON, W.Va (WDTV) – The pandemic has motivated people to think outside the box and as the coronavirus transforms, local school officials are adjusting with it.

“It’s a good idea, it started off pretty small,” said director of wellness and nutrition Eddie Vincent.

Vincent says that several years ago the district applied for a grant for an outdoor food court.

“And then from there we thought maybe you knew about the covid hits and we started looking for ways to reduce the number of people in our cafeteria, so we started looking to be able to have our lunches. outdoors in the open, ”said Vincent.

Vincent thinks the kids will enjoy having lunch outside.

But that’s not all. Vincent says the local school improvement board had a vision for more than a food court.

“That, combined with the need or desire to go out, we designed an outdoor classroom so that it was an outdoor space where we can have a classroom where teachers would reserve this as a library,” said Vincent. .

Upshur County School Board approved a contract for the outdoor classroom and dining hall.

“It might cause supervision issues and things like that, but it’s something we can work on and we’ll have a plan and the long term vision for this is really cool for Buckhannon-Upshur High School.” said Vincent.

Construction is scheduled to begin this spring.
