Archaeological assessment to be done on the outdoor dining area at Arklow

Avril Hill, Arklow Municipal District Engineer, told elected officials that an archaeological assessment is the next step for Fáilte Ireland’s outdoor dining area at Abbey Lane in Arklow.

s Hill told councilors at their January meeting that an archaeologist had been appointed and a request had been made to the National Monuments Service for test trenches.

Councilor Sylvester Bourke (FG) said: ‘There has been clearing work done on the outdoor dining area but it doesn’t feel right to leave a site like this. What is the next step for this? »

Ms Hill said: “No more work can be done on the outdoor dining area until the archaeological assessment is complete, we have to do that as it is next to the abbey. If they find something, that will dictate the additional work that can be done there.

“The test trenches are expected to take a week. The archaeologist hopes to be licensed by the end of January.”

Councilor Peir Leonard (Ind) said: ‘Could we ask the archaeologist to keep a record of what he is doing in the outdoor dining area? It is a very important part of our heritage.

Ms Hill said the archaeologist will keep a record of what they did there.
